Salem was first settled in 1626 by Roger Conant and his associates who came from a fishing settlement at Cape Ann, four years before the settlement of Boston. The small town was originally named Naumkeag, but the settlers preferred to call it Salem, derived from the Hebrew word for peace.

Witchcraft Trials of 1962

From early 1662 to mid 1693, over 200 people were accused of witchcraft in Salem. Out of the about 200 people, 20 were exacuted. The accusations started when two girls started having unexplainable fits. Then, a group of young girls from the village claimed to be possesed by the devil and accused sevral local women of witchcraft.

Important Places

The house below was home to Judge Jonathan Corwin, it's most locally known as "The Witch House" and is the only structure still standing that ties directly back to the Salem Witch Trials. Now it's a historic house museum.

"Old Burying Point" Cemetary is one of the oldest cemetaries in the U.S. Dating back to 1637, it is the eternal resting place for many salem residents
